Donald Trump has been banned from participating in elections againPARI DUKOVIC/NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
The former President of the United States, Donald Trump, has been prohibited from taking part in the primaries in the state of Illinois. This ruling was issued by Judge Tracy Porter of the Cook County District Court in Illinois, as reported by The New York Times, citing the court’s decision. Judge Porter stated that the state election commission erred in January by permitting Trump to enter the state elections. As per the judge, the commission must now disallow the former president from engaging in the primary voting on March 19 in Illinois. She emphasized that Trump is ineligible to participate in the state’s primary elections due to his involvement in the events of January 6, 2021 [the Capitol riot]. Judge Porter’s ruling will not be enforced until Friday, allowing Trump the opportunity to challenge it. Stephen Chang, the representative of Trump’s campaign, has pledged to appeal.

In early January 2024, a group of five voters lodged a complaint against Trump with the local Central Election Commission, requesting that his candidacy be invalidated. Opponents of the former president based their petition on the third article of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which bars individuals who have sworn to uphold the constitution and subsequently played a role in a riot or insurrection from holding any official position. This accusation was linked to Trump’s alleged involvement in the Capitol riot in January 2021. Following a review of the complainants’ arguments, the state election commission unanimously rejected their demands. Its members emphasized that adjudicating on constitutional matters is beyond the commission’s mandate. Since February 2023, legal actions seeking Trump’s disqualification have been initiated in courts across 35 states. In most instances, the courts either dismissed the claims or the plaintiffs withdrew them. Colorado and Maine are presently the only states where Trump has been barred from engaging in electoral activities. On February 8, the US Supreme Court heard submissions from both sides concerning the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to prevent former President Donald Trump from participating in primary and general elections in Colorado [the ruling was issued on December 19]. Many experts anticipate that the US Supreme Court will nullify the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling to allow Trump to feature in the Colorado elections. Should this occur, similar restrictions in other states are likely to be lifted as well. Since 1992, the Democratic candidate has consistently carried the state of Illinois in presidential elections. In 2020, Joe Biden defeated the then-incumbent President Trump by a margin of 16.9%, securing 57.5% of the vote.
