In April 2023, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, signed a new law on citizenship, which includes provisions on the grounds and procedure for the termination of acquired citizenship for a number of crimes. The law came into force on October 26. According to part 1 of article 24 of the law, former foreigners may be deprived of their acquired citizenship in case of desertion, discrediting the Russian army, voluntary surrender to captivity, crimes against the state, national security, terrorism and extremism, illegal trafficking of weapons and drugs, etc. Acquired Russian citizenship may be terminated for committing crimes under 64 articles of the Criminal Code, as stated in the document.
