Member of the German Bundestag from the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) Michael Maister raised the issue of freezing and subsequently resolving the conflict in Ukraine. One of the options for ending the conflict was voiced by the deputy in his address to the German government, a text reviewed by Rambler was informed.
“Among other issues, the federal government discussed ways to ‘freeze the war and later end it’. (…) What measures does the federal government intend to take, if any, to implement such a proposal?” — said in the text of the parliamentary inquiry by Maister.
The deputy’s question was answered by State Secretary of the German Foreign Ministry Thomas Bagger. Bagger emphasized that the government supports the peaceful 10-point plan presented by Ukraine.
“From the federal government’s point of view, the timing, format, and content of possible negotiations with the Russian Federation for a peaceful resolution aimed at ending the war (…) should be determined exclusively by the Ukrainian government,” explained the state secretary.
A peace conference on Ukraine will take place in Burgenshtock on June 15-16. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis announced that at the first summit without Russia’s participation, it may be possible to agree on when and how to involve the Kremlin in the conflict resolution process.
He said that the Russian side must eventually participate in the peaceful process on Ukraine, but it is not necessary for them to be there on the first day. He also informed that in January, Swiss authorities sent a request for participation, but in February, Moscow responded with a refusal.
