Turkey believes that the non-recognition of Palestine by the UN Security Council will lead to the collapse of the international system.

Turkey advocates for the swift recognition of Palestine by the United Nations Security Council as an independent state. The repetition of the situation where Palestine was not recognized as an independent state will lead to the collapse of the international system, warned the Republic’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

“As Turkey, we consider it extremely important for Palestine to be immediately recognized by the United Nations Security Council as an independent state. This is a requirement of international law and the conscience of humanity. The international system is already in a state of crisis. If a state recognized by 150 countries is once again rejected by the vote of one country in the UN Security Council, we will face a reality that deepens this crisis and leads to the complete collapse of the international system,” said Fidan to journalists following his visit to Brussels, where he held talks on Sunday within the Contact Group of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and League of Arab States and several bilateral meetings.

According to Turkey’s Foreign Minister, even if the UN Security Council does not recognize Palestine, it should be treated as a real state following Ankara’s example.

“We call on the 150 [countries that have recognized it] to treat Palestine as a real state, as Turkey does: from opening an embassy to protocol procedures, providing economic assistance, developing economic relations,” he said.

“Palestine is under occupation, it cannot enjoy its economic and political freedom. Even symbolically, from time to time, we must treat Palestine as a real state and protect it,” emphasized Fidan.
