What can hemp be used for

Hemp seeds and stems can be processed and consumed. The seeds do not contain psychoactive elements. They can be used for food, oil can be produced from them, and the meal is used as animal feed. Hemp stems are used to extract fiber for the production of textile products, technical ropes, non-woven materials, cellulose for papermaking, and especially strong composites for aerospace and automotive industries.

According to Marina Dmitrieva, the curator of the project on growing and deep processing of technical hemp at the Irkutsk company “Promrusskon,” from one hectare of hemp, you can produce as much cellulose as from almost 5 hectares of forest. Her company produces biodegradable composites for packaging and packaging film production, which are almost as strong as plastics but decompose in three months.
