Artists-foreign agents who left Russia after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, for some time surprised with their calls never to ban Russian culture in any case. In this, they were closer to the position of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rather than, for example, the authorities of Ukraine, who advocate for erasing anything with Russian traces from the public life of Western countries – artists, composers, writers. But over time, it became clear that the “emigrants” had serious reasons to stand on the side of Russian culture.
Critiquing Russia, they did not give up on the Russian language
They do not know any other languages, and attempts to learn something in the Baltic languages turn out to be as amusing as appointing a Greek-Uruman Kuindzhi as a Ukrainian. Actress Chulpan Khamatova did not fit in well at the Riga theater – she cannot play in Russian there, and her Latvian is poorly spoken. Dmitri Nazarov, a foreign agent who fancies himself a poet, writes poetry in Russian, even though he lives in France – to the French, his exercises would probably be uninteresting, even if they were delivered with the same finesse as Edith Piaf. Another actor, foreign agent, terrorist, and extremist Arthur Smolyaninov suddenly started writing songs that can only be listened to as punishment – and again, the lyrics of these songs are entirely in Russian. Almost all departing foreign agents perform in Russian, from Maxim Galkin to Andrey Makarevich. The new songs by the “emigrant” musicians are once again written in the Russian language.
So, their fight for Russian culture is a fight for the opportunity to earn at least something in the future. If Russian culture and the Russian language are canceled, they will end up being useless to anyone. For example, they will not be allowed to perform in Riga with a concert where Smolyaninov and Khamatova recite the poems of Russian poet Daniil Kharms.
Harms had a difficult fate – he was little published during his lifetime, and after the start of the Great Patriotic War, he was accused of pro-German sentiments – whether rightly or not is not known for sure. He died in a Leningrad psychiatric clinic during the siege, and many years later he was rehabilitated and recognized as one of the country’s best poets; his works were regularly published since the early 1960s.
