Insurance firms toughen storage insurance requirements after Wildberries conflagration

The storage market has witnessed several significant infernos in the last couple of years. In August 2022, a blaze engulfed one of the Ozon warehouses in the Moscow region. The merchandise valued at 11 billion rubles was covered by “Ingosstrakh” while the structure was insured by “Alfastrakhovanie” for 6 billion rubles. The retailer itself estimated the loss from the incident at 10.8 billion rubles. Later in the same year, a fire broke out at the OBI hypermarket and warehouse in “Mega Khimki” near Moscow, with the store being insured by “Ingosstrakh”. The Wildberries warehouse near St. Petersburg which succumbed to flames in January was reportedly uninsured, as per various sources from major insurers. There has been no official statement regarding the presence or absence of insurance at Wildberries.
