Most Russians (64%) only go to a medical institution in case of serious health problems, found out SK “Rosgosstrakh Life” and VTB during a joint survey. 31% of respondents visit a doctor if symptoms persist for a long time, 19% do so in case of acute pain, 14% try to avoid visits to specialists because of fear of doctors. A quarter of Russians (23%) seek medical help when they start to feel the first signs of illness. Only 13% of those surveyed regularly monitor their health and visit medical institutions, including for the purpose of prevention.The survey results show that Russians postpone a visit to the doctor even in case of severe discomfort, with the main reason being lack of time: as answered by 25% of respondents. Among other factors influencing this decision are fear of detecting a serious illness and not knowing which doctor to turn to – both 18%, lack of clearly defined symptoms of the disease – 12%, fear of doctors (iatrophobia) – 6%, preference for self-treatment, including folk remedies – 4%, etc.
Most often, Russians turn to dentists (31%), therapists (24%), gastroenterologists (13%), ENT specialists (9%), surgeons (7%), dermatologists (7%). Respondents could choose multiple answers from the options provided.
The survey was conducted from April 8 to April 12, 2024. It involved 1276 residents of Russia from all federal districts, 61% were men and 39% were women.
