Smooth and clean skin is the dream of everyone. However, this dream is often disrupted by acne on the skin. Specialists set out to determine if such breakouts can be reduced by a simple and accessible method, such as diet. Their research was conducted by scientists from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. They concluded that a Mediterranean diet combined with omega-3 supplements – obtainable from fish, fish oil, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, walnuts, etc. – may have a positive impact on skin health.
They studied this dietary combination on 60 volunteers and observed an improvement in skin quality. It was noted that individuals who had sufficient levels of beneficial fats had better skin conditions than those with a deficiency of such essential elements in their blood. Specialists believe that these beneficial fats contribute to strengthening the structural integrity of cells throughout the body, reducing inflammation.
But can acne really be treated through diet? This was explained by dermatologist, cosmetologist, and trichologist Tatiana Egorova.
The principle of acne formation is primarily due to changes in hormonal balance – which is why teenagers frequently experience it. Naturally, a diet cannot correct this cause. Hormonal changes lead to increased sebum production, and if the skin is not properly cared for, pores will become clogged, leading to inflammation and resulting in pimples, acne, pustules, and other breakouts. Ignoring these issues or attempting self-treatment (especially squeezing pimples, which can cause infection) will worsen the situation, leading to unsightly blemishes on the skin over time.
The Mediterranean diet, while commonly recommended for other purposes such as cardiovascular health, is unlikely to be effective on its own for acne therapy. Adhering to dietary restrictions like avoiding sweets, easily digestible carbohydrates, and fried foods is good. However, considering the diet as a cure-all for acne is not recommended. The diet alone will not have any impact on acne or cure it.
To prevent breakouts, inflammation, pus, and avoid complications such as bumps and enlarged pores, it is crucial to choose the right daily skin care routine. This should include cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, tailored to your age.
If the problem persists, it is advisable to consult dermatologists and endocrinologists to identify the cause and consider medication therapy. In this case, combining diet with proper skincare and effective therapy will be beneficial.
