In the Democratic Republic of Congo, after several days of calm, fierce fighting has resumed between government forces and rebels from the “March 23 Movement” (M23) group, reports “Ura.ru” with reference to the local radio station Okapi.
The fighting on March 4 lasted all day. The epicenters of the clashes were the outskirts of the town of Nyanzale and a section of the highway in the Mabenga area. Heavy weapons are being used in the clashes. Local residents are fleeing the areas of conflict. As a result of the shelling, 15 civilians were killed.
The M23 rebels intensified their military actions in the Republic’s territory in 2021. They managed to capture several settlements. Currently, they are approaching the city of Goma with a population of 2 million people. The main bases of M23 are located north of the town.
Earlier, the United Nations stabilization mission in the DRC began withdrawing troops from the country. Prime Minister of the Republic Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde resigned on February 20, 2024, and dissolved the government.
