The Popocatepetl volcano, located 70 km from Mexico City, has become active and started emitting steam and ash into the atmosphere. This was reported by the National Center for Disaster Prevention of Mexico.
“In the past 24 hours, 9 emissions have been recorded, as well as 1,394 minutes of high-frequency, low-amplitude volcanic tremors,” the department said.
According to their data, volcanic activity was accompanied by emissions of steam, ash, and various gases.
“The volcanic hazard warning traffic light for the Popocatepetl volcano is in the second phase (out of three possible phases – ed. TASS),” noted the national center.
As volcanologists have pointed out, the safe distance at the moment is 12 km from the volcano’s crater.
Popocatepetl is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Latin America. Its height reaches 5.42 km.
