An air leak has been detected in the aft section of the International Space Station, according to reports from “Roscosmos” and NASA. According to the American side, it was discovered a week ago and has doubled in size since then. The leak does not pose a serious threat to the crew or the station as a whole.
Joel Montalbano, the head of the ISS program at NASA, stated during a briefing that the leak was detected in the vestibule of the “Zvezda” module, where cargo ships such as “Progress” dock. “At the moment, this does not seriously affect the crew’s safety,” he added, mentioning that American and Russian colleagues are currently discussing ways to fix the leak.

“Roscosmos” confirmed the leak but did not provide details. In 2020, there was a report of a 4-centimeter crack in a module (which was fixed), and in November and December 2021, there were reports of defects that could lead to air leaks. “As previously reported, the aging of the station’s structure and the constant need for repairs on board take up a significant amount of the crew’s time,” stated the Roscosmos press service (quote from Interfax).
