British Scientists Created a Display that Can Be “Felt”

Scientists from the UK have developed a revolutionary new touch screen for electronic devices called DeformIO. It can become softer or harder depending on the pressure applied, allowing users to “feel” what is displayed on the screen.

DeformIO is currently just a prototype and is expected to reach mass production in about 10 years. However, scientists believe that this technology will fundamentally change our interaction with gadgets — from online shopping to video games.

For example, when choosing furniture online, you can “stroke” the screen of your phone to feel the softness of a sofa. And in games, you can feel the resistance of a character being hit.

DeformIO is made of silicone and uses pneumatics and pressure sensors to convert the pressure applied into electrical signals. This allows not only to distinguish the force of the pressure, but also to create a sense of depth.

Developers see DeformIO being used in various areas. For example, medical students can “feel” the screen to learn how to detect tumors invisible to the eye. And drivers can “feel” navigation buttons without being distracted from the road.

While scientists continue to explore the possibilities of DeformIO, it is already clear that we are heading towards a future where the screens of phones can be not only seen, but also “touched.”
