Scientists have created innovative ceramics to improve the quality of smartphone displays

Scientists from Ural Federal University (UrFU), together with colleagues from the Urals Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and representatives of scientific circles in India, have developed ceramics that fluoresce in three primary colors – red, green, and blue. The authors are confident that these characteristics will improve the brightness and detail of displays for smartphones and televisions.

In addition, the new material is very strong – it was created under high pressure at relatively low temperatures.

It is worth noting that the familiar pixels – these are the smallest elements of color reproduction on the screen. The color gamut is formed by a combination of red, green, and blue colors. In the material developed by Ural scientists, the emission of all three colors is achieved by adding carbon particles.

“Since nanoceramics is capable of providing all three basic colors of the spectrum, there is no need to use three LEDs separately. Also, thanks to its strength, the material will eliminate defects and achieve optical transparency. These characteristics will be useful for the production of smartphone and tablet displays,” said co-author of the study, Associate Professor of the Department of Physical Methods and Quality Control Devices at UrFU, Yulia Kuznetsova.

Alumina-magnesium spinel was used as the material for nanoceramics – it has a cubic structure of the crystal lattice, which prevents light from refraction and scattering.
