Tourists in the Italian city of Verona rubbed a hole in the right breast of the statue of Shakespeare’s play William Shakespeare’s Juliet, as reported by The Guardian.
The bronze figure stands under the balcony in a tiny courtyard where, according to legend, Romeo courted Juliet.
Every day, hundreds of tourists come here to take photos with the pedestal and touch Juliet’s breast. It is believed that this ritual brings luck in love.
The courtyard with Juliet’s sculpture is located next to the “Casa di Giulietta,” a restored 13th-century building that once belonged to the noble Capello family. Local residents believe that this family inspired the fictional Capulet family in the play “Romeo and Juliet.”
It was previously reported that in a year, 1.6 million euros worth of coins were thrown into the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
